it does not work that way, as long as they pay for margin, they dont have to buy back to fill in the borrowed units , there is no time limit, to minimise loss, they will have to keep selling to manipulate the loss if the SP is up trending, hence the short position ease very slowly, except some big fish jump into the pool and starting take the long position ... this is my understadning.
