    I don't think the Voice does "racially" divide the country. Morally, ethically, legally, politically, it's about recognition of the reality of this land prior to colonisation. Indigenous people were, and are, racially diverse, as are non-indigenous people, albeit the mix is different. But the Voice is not about race per se.

    To illustrate: say ten years down the track Putin dies and there's a big convention to undo the damage of the Ukraine invasion. It's not done because of the race of the people who happen to live in the country illegally invaded, it's done because it's the right thing to do. It also takes a weight off the shoulders of ordinary Russians who want to make amends.

    Likewise constitutional recognition removes a nasty stain from the national, legal reality of Australia. It is necessary to enhance our legitimacy as a nation, the entire nation.

    As for making life better, to do that we have to ask the people themselves. You'd have to say that the "solutions" imposed by outsiders have failed so far. If indigenous people had a Voice, for example, the evil of creating the stolen generations might have been stopped.
