The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC) (1990–2005) was the Australian Government body through which Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders were formally involved in the processes of government affecting their lives, established under the Hawke government in 1990.
Consulting with Indigenous Australians
3.47 The existence of ATSIC gave opportunities for Indigenous Australians to have a national, representative voice. One important way in which this voice was heard was through government bodies being required to consult with ATSIC, or to have ATSIC members as representatives on their boards.
