As society becomes more diverse, the range of answers to your question becomes greater and thus the capacity for anything cohesive and useful to all people disappears.
Whilst yours is a good question, it becomes an academic question only while the politics of Australia is the antithesis of what is good for its citizens. I've explained what I think Australia's way of life means to me in a previous post (to some extent) and hence the direction we should go. Imo, we have lost a lot of what was good at the altar of tolerance and multiculturalism.
