    Hi DBT9 yes Catholic church in the true meaning of Catholic as the books had to be universal that was one of the tests but the evolution of Roman Papal supremacy was much later in history so not to be conflated with the notion of a Roman Catholic Church.

    I think the earliest canon was the Muratorian Canon which contained from memory over 20 of the 27 books of the NT. I think second Peter may not have been on the list which was added later. Not all of the Christian world had complete sets of books as it was still a church on the run for the first four centuries.

    The canonisation of the old testament took around 400 years the new testament was a little bit more expeditious.
