The simple fact is that the west no more has the right to control who governs Afghanistan than Afghanistan has the right to decide who governs the west. Whether or not the Taliban governs Afghanistan is broadly a matter for the Afghan people. They did have 20 years of training to prevent it, which dissolved in about 20 minutes. Short of the regime becoming genocidal or exporting mass casualty terrorism, it's their matter to resolve.
