I was also watching nearmap since it was recommended by Motley fool last year. Personally, I think they do have great proprietary technology which can give you great images compared to Google. However, they still use traditional image capture method which is flying a plane around an area and taking photographs.
Google maps on the other hand uses satellite technology and while the image may not be as good as Nearmap at the moment, as with all technology it continues to evolve and improve and maybe in another 2-3 years, Google will be able to give high-res images same as Nearmap.
The main point of difference however is satellite capture versus traditional aerial photography and this is what tilts my balance to Google.
This is the biggest threat to Nearmap and I reckon the only way stock prices will appreciate is if Google buys them off.

Hey, FYI...Google maps "high res" isn't satellite, it is aerial imagery! Depending on the location they use different providers such as SKM and Fugro. If you zoom in on an area you will see the copyright change at the bottom.
