The angst that occurs in these forums when a trial fails demonstrates the fact that a large percentage of the holders clearly don't understand the risks of their investment in biotech companies. Simply put, most of these companies are a marketing department to attract investors bolted onto an unproven product. Clinical or laboratory science is inherently unpredictable as we have imperfect knowledge about the processes involved. Anyone who has spent time working in scientific research will tell you that the number of times the researcher is correct is well outweighed by being incorrect. Cancer is particularly difficult - essentially one is trying to outwit the evolutionary capacity of a large number of very complex cells that are continuously mutating, potentially producing a resistant clone at any time. In the Hy-Act trial, for instance, it might sound sensible that delivering more drug to the cancer cells by way of a carrier molecule would be more effective than just injecting it into the blood stream, but what if the cancer cells simply down regulate the receptor for the carrier molecule? Or beyond a certain intracellular concentration of the drug the cell simply ejects it all through the MDR pump? We simply don't know. So anybody's 'belief in the science' is actually about as well-founded as 'belief in the Loch Ness monster'. What you are actually believing in is the marketing department. Do you believe everything the Samsung marketing department has to say about its products? This is not to say they are deliberately devious, but in order to attract investors they must put the most positive spin on their projects as possible. Investing in a biotech involved in clinical trials is like chancing your arm at the casino, like playing blackjack basic strategy, or playing red at roulette - good money can certainly be made, but in a casino you'd not be overly surprised to bomb out, and you shouldn't be here. Complaining about the scientists or wanting them to explain a negative result shows a basic lack of knowledge about your investment. You have been drawn onto the rocks by the sirens, when you could have sailed on elsewhere.
