My concern with nuclear is on three fronts:
1. Costs and union standover tactics (just look at cross river rail in Brisbane). Whether it’s a tunnel, a stadium, or God forbid a nuclear power plant, cost escalation in this country is out of control.
2. Legal challenges. There would potentially be legal challenges all over the place, from the usual anti-nuclear groups, traditional owners, farm groups, local residents, state governments and local councils. This will slow down construction and add to the costs.
3. Decommissioning. A very long and expensive process with nuclear. At this stage in the nuclear plant’s life cycle, the costs are very high, and the revenue generated is nil.
I have zero concerns about nuclear safety if there is proper and effective oversight of both the construction and operating processes.
