Perhaps their elderly parents earned their respect, rather than demanded it.
Respecting someone who beats and abuses you, or your siblings, or their spouse, will only lead to those actions being passed on to future generations. Respect for convention’s sake is stupid.
Which isn’t to say that you don’t look after your elderly parents; a sense of duty, or pity, will suffice. But respecting bad behaviour? Weird.
