IMO we need to focus on what our people do best that is likely to command high incomes in the years ahead.
One of my son's mates undertook Computer Science with him at Monash Uni. Ten years on my son's mate is one of the world's best SAP programmers [industrial strength databases], with his own company whose highly skilled workforce is already over 40 people from all over the planet.
Sadly, he had to leave Australia due to lack of local opportunity & dodobird broadband. He hopes to return to run his company out of Australia & has his fingers crossed that the NBN will become reality. Otherwise home is the UK, China or the US & that's where those high paying jobs will be as well.
