Oil futures traded mostly in negative territory until the U.S. Department of Energy reported that oil inventories plunged by 8.4 million barrels last week, shocking a market that was preparing for already sky-high stockpiles to keep rising. Analysts had expected a 1.5 million-barrel increase, according to a Dow Jones Newswires survey.
