NextDC to host MS cloud service

MICROSOFT is believed to have selected data-centre provider NextDC to host its Windows Azure cloud computing services in Australia.
The software giant has repeatedly refused to detail its local data-centre plans, saying only that it was interested in two locations — in NSW and Victoria — for its Azure cloud platform.
Azure is used to host websites and applications such as email and collaboration on a pay-per-use model.
It is understood an internal announcement on the NextDC alliance is imminent although it’s unclear if Microsoft plans to make it public. NextDC has hubs in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth and Brisbane.
A Microsoft spokesman said the company “builds and leases data-centre space around the world”.
“We understand that replicating data within Australia helps customers ensure that data sovereignty goals are met where applicable,’’ he said.
“Our expansion to offer local Microsoft Azure services in Australia also provides customers with the option to take advantage of geo-replication between the two sub-regions.
“Additionally, customers who deploy locally accessed applications to the new sub-regions will enjoy improved performance.”
NextDC chief executive Craig Scroggie declined to comment, referring all questions to Microsoft.
