As MrG wrote, that Carl Sagan "candidly acknowledged: “The fossil evidence could be consistent with the idea of a Great Designer."
The only straw man arguments was in Carl Sagan's description of the "Great Designer" who he proceeded to knock down.

I never suggested that Carl Sagan was a creationist, that is absurd. I previously stated

"While Sagan does not believe in a "Great Designer" he did concede that the fossil evidence could be consistent with one."

    And that is the point.
Carl Sagan did state "The fossil evidence could be consistent with the idea of a Great Designer "
It was a "candid acknowledgement " even though Sagan believes in evolution and rejects a "Great Designer"

Really you should have an issue with the poster from the "reddit" article who wished to change what Sagan actually wrote stating,

"before there was an extensive knowledge of the fossil record."

Carl Sagan never stated than a "Great Designer" was understandable " before there was an extensive knowledge of the fossil record."

Carl Sagan wrote "The fossil evidence could be consistent with the idea of a Great Designer "
