If there were gods they would have made people smart enough to realize that there are no gods. Therein lies the paradox of gods. Still, the fairytale of the dark ages persists for those who fear death and the eternal darkness of the end; the only true beneficiaries are those who prosper from the collection plates of the gullible. Therein lies the truth, and the lies of the perpetuators of dubious myths.
