This month's key figures

The total number of road deaths in August 2005 was 154 - this is a 14.1% increase over the August 2004 figure.

The number of road deaths in 2005 to the end of August is 1,087 - this is a 1.7% increase over the same 8 month period in 2004.

Almost 200 Australians were killed by the Bali bombing. And that is terrible.

Yet more than 5 times that number of Australians are killed, and multiples of that '5 times' damaged every year on our roads.

And we accept it as a feature of modern day life.

The headlines and the politics raise, and indeed encourage, fear and hatred.
