Morgan Stanley analyst Cameron Judd said there was potential for a higher offer, either from Newcrest or another bidder. In a report yesterday, Mr Judd put a takeover valuation on Lihir between $3.87 and $6.50 a share.
The valuation was based on recent deals in the gold sector and potential synergies for Newcrest from the deal.
