Canberra was founded 100 years ago on 12 March 1913.
There are many events to celebrate the city's centenary.
There's the official history about pomp and ceremony:
And there's the working-class history of Canberra in which
you can see the Redhead who stole my virginity in 1957 in
Reid House, a hostel that replaced the tents and humpies
that were mostly hidden from view as they were squalid.
But they housed the men who built Parliament House.
Women came later, and got hostel accommodation.
But with odds of 40 women to 210 young men, my
chances of romantic success in Reid House were
not good. But as my father once said to me:
'You never know your luck in the big city."
