KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has dismissed criticism against Lynas’ operations in Malaysia, saying that the rare earth processing plant “is not Chernobyl”.

Experts, he said, have inspected the Lynas Malaysia Sdn Bhd (Lynas Malaysia) plant in Gebeng, Kuantan and established that it poses no danger.

“We (the public) are insisting that it is dangerous. So it is very difficult for the government to decide.

“But reports say it’s not dangerous. It’s not Chernobyl. This isn’t going to be dangerous,” he told reporters after the 2019 World Statistics Congress opening ceremony, here, today.

He said people would always have something to disagree about, and said the government could not always take the popular view.

“If we continue with the popular view, there’s nothing we can do. Every time we want to propose something new, people will go against it.

“Remember when we wanted to build the Penang Bridge? There was so much opposition to it. Now they have a second bridge and want to build a tunnel.”

He stressed that experts have said there was no “great danger” to the radioactive material, ensuring that its waste would be dispersed accordingly.

On Thursday, Australian rare earths company Lynas Corp’s operation permit was renewed for another six months, with three conditions imposed on them.

Lynas has been embroiled in controversy for several years, with environmentalists and Pakatan Harapan politicians protesting against the plant on health grounds and calling for its closure.

Critics were particularly concerned about the potential adverse health effects that the radioactive waste would potentially have on local communities.

Lynas' permit renewal became a hot topic given that it is the world's only major producer of rare earths outside China.
