Other than the smattering of convicts, my free settler ancestors left shitholes in Ireland, Scotland and England in search of a better life here too. The Irish Catholics were vilified by everyone but the other Irish and couldn't intermarry for two generations. The Irish and half the Scots only spoke gaelic so they had to adapt too. Ultimately, all the integration took maybe two or three generations and now no-one gives a shit about the shithole in the UK. My more recent relos who were reffos from the Post WWII Europe shithole are all Aussies now too. We're all proud to be mongrels, and I suspect in a generation or two, we'll be mongrels with a bit of ME and Asian lineage as well. It's the Australian way.
