    The states mitigated it?

The people responded to a threat.
    Many people stayed home initially.
A perfectly rational response to the unknown.
Remember flatten the curve so that hospitals wouldn't be overwhelmed?
The curve was flattened and hospital emergency departments had less people to deal with than usual.
People working from home, less travel, indoor venues hosting crowds closed.

Fast forward and more and more people no longer feel threatened but the response has accelerated some societal changes.
For instance, more online shopping and organisations facilitating work from home.

One big issue is the staes' propensity to close borders at the drop of a hat when someone has an outbreak.
It's playing havoc with peoples travel plans and business planning.

Financial support winding down so there should be a rise in bankruptcy over the next two years with associated mental health ramifications.
