I recall as a young lad watching "Sale of the Century" when a Motorola mobile phone valued at $10,000 was one of the prizes. Possibly the early 80's? Probably more like $100,000 equivalent in today's money.
I did my engineering degree in the early 90's, with VGA monitors and dot matrix printers. The lab where I was working as a casual upgraded the memory on their SPARC-20 from 32MB to 96MB by paying $3,500 for a 64 megabyte SIMM. That's available on a single chip now for under five bucks.
