Sadly many people still believe that googling stuff without a systematic approach to interrogating data and information, critical analysis and synthesis constitutes as research.
These are probably the same people that read the papers and just believe everything that's fed to them.
swami2 provides a good example of this. 'Oh look, there's already an existing device - therefore you must be wasting your time'.
Using that logic, you could also argue that we should have stopped trying to make progress when someone 'invented the wheel', and that there was next to no market for something that just rolled down a hill, except as a toy.
There was no need to think about the axle, fulcrum etc to see what value that could add to it and what new markets that would've created.
