The red tape is being cut loose

WHEN the World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Index recently ranked 148 countries in terms of their regulatory burden and placed Australia a pitiful 128th, Australia's decision-makers were sent an ominous message. Cut red and green tape now or the cost will be high.
This message has been heeded, with the Abbott government already announcing more than 30 deregulation initiatives, worth more than $150 million. Memorandums of Understanding have been signed with Queensland and NSW setting out the key principles and framework for one-stop-shop environmental approvals with more state signatures soon to come.
