While Volante got in ahead of the ASX speed police on Friday -
in a day of many ASX queries, by the way - BIOTRON (BIT) came up with
one of the most helpful replies.
It said it was not aware of any information which could explain
the rise from 20c on Thursday to 28.5c on Friday.
However, the company said, "It is possible that the price change
in the securities of the company is a recognition by the market of the
significance of the latest results which demonstrated that BIT225,
Biotron's lead compound which progressed recently into a clinical
development program, is able to improve the activity of current HIV
therapies.
"These recent studies, independently performed by Southern
Research Institute of Maryland, USA, are significant as they indicate
that the company's compound will be complementary to existing HIV
treatments regimens.
"These latest BIT225 results are further evidence that Biotron's
anti-HIV therapy will play a critical role in HIV treatment.
"As previously reported, BIT225 is active against strains of HIV
that are resistant to existing drugs.
"Discovery and development of new anti-HIV-1 drugs that attack
different parts of the virus life cycle is essential in the continuing
fight against resistance."
If that's the case then the "recognition" took a long time to
materialise because the shares fell from 20c to 17.5c after the November
30 announcement.
Biotron closed off the top at 25c, up 3c, as turnover soared to
1.7 million shares, a fivefold increase on recent averages.
