Centaurus a keeper, says Wendt, following impressive early stage cobalt results

Centaurus Metals (ASX: CTM) will remain “firmly held” within his portfolio, says veteran Sydney-based resource analyst Gavin Wendt, following some “highly encouraging” results from initial auger drilling results at its recently acquired Itapitanga cobalt project in northern Brazil.

Writing in his widely-circulated Minelife newsletter, Wendt says the new results show the significant potential of the Itapitanga project against the backdrop of continued strength in cobalt prices amid growing concerns about supply bottlenecks from the world’s key supplier of the highly sought-after battery metal, the DRC.

Early exploration results from Itapitanga have already delivered a 33% gain on Centaurus shares since Wendt initiated coverage, with the latest results highlighting the presence of shallow, high-grade nickel-cobalt mineralisation over an extensive area.

“Encouragingly, there’s been further good exploration news with the results of initial broad‐spaced auger drilling,” Wendt wrote.

"The first nine auger holes have tested a 3km strike length of the Northern Target area, with seven of the first nine holes finishing in high‐grade nickel‐cobalt mineralisation.

“The Northern Target area remains open in all directions and the ongoing auger drilling program will continue to identify the limits of the surface mineralisation.

“The hand‐held auger drills provide a useful early‐test of the extent of the mineralisation, however they have limitations as they struggle to penetrate below a vertical depth of 7‐10m.

“The Itapitanga Project is located within the Carajás Mineral Province, a tropical region that hosts deep weathering profiles generally to 50m and often beyond to 100m.

“Anglo American’s neighbouring world‐class Jacaré Ni‐Co Deposit for example is hosted in a laterite profile that is mineralised from surface down to an average depth of 50m.

“These early stage results provide strong indications that the high‐grade cobalt mineralisation at Itapitanga is similar to that seen at the adjoining large‐scale nickel‐cobalt projects owned by Anglo American and Vale.

“The choice of auger drilling relates to its ability to quickly confirm the widths and grade of mineralisation down to depths of up to 20m.”

RC drilling is required to determine the full width and grade of the nickel‐cobalt mineralisation, with planning for this phase of work well underway.

Centaurus has said that submissions have been sought from suitable RC drill contractors to undertake a 5,000m RC program, potentially commencing in late March or early April once further information and assays have been received from the ongoing auger drilling program.
