Citizens’ eyes on Lynas

PETALING JAYA (Feb 11, 2013): Concern over the Lynas rare earth project in Kuantan has led a group of professional Malaysians to form a citizens watch group to monitor the project closely.

"Our group consists of highly qualified professionals with skills, knowledge and experience in engineering, medical and health, legal as well as other fields of work," said the group's spokesman, Alia Mohamad Said.

Alia, who is a lawyer, said the group is committed to strict professional ethics to watch over the project and hold the government accountable for their regulatory roles.

"The formation of a watch group is crucial since there are many known risks and hazards from rare earth processing," she said.

The group also noted that the Parliamentary Select Committee has made 31 recommendations concerning the project and there are other conditions and requirements set by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry and International Trade and Industry Ministry and the Atomic Energy Licensing Board in the licensing process.

Another group member, Rahiza Zulkifli said: "The public has the right to know how each and every recommendation, provision, condition and requirement set by our regulators and the IAEA have been treated to date. Our involvement in the watch group stems primarily from our professional duty of care for Malaysia and Malaysians. The watch group will be additionally supported by qualified and experienced international experts as and when necessary."
