Labor seeks Israeli 'spy' briefing

Labor's Homeland Security spokesman Robert McLelland says the Opposition will seek a briefing from the Government on what inquiries have been made about Israeli spies in Australia, and what has been revealed.

Senator McLelland says the apparent unmasking of Israeli secret service operatives in New Zealand highlights the need for a proper exchange of information between the intelligence organisations of friendly nations.

"I know no admissions are being made regarding whether these fellows were or were not Mossad agents, but nonetheless at least on a confidential basis such briefings should be occurring," he said.

"Again all countries are entitled to be reassured that no attempts will be made to breach our own security, in particular passport systems."

A spokesman for Attorney-General Philip Ruddock told the Sydney Morning Herald that investigations into suspected Mossad spies on Australian soil are continuing.

Alleged spy Eli Cara, one of two Israelis imprisoned in New Zealand on passport fraud charges, spent a significant amount of time in Australia and a house he lived in was raided shortly before his arrival in Auckland in March.

''It was quite clear that people had left in a hurry,'' the spokesman was quoted as saying.
