some donkey over at the abc, had this call on the election

There's a lot more turning on the elections later this month than the future of Australia. It is also a plebiscite on George Bush's fight against the terrorism that has plagued the civilized world for 60 years.

A vote for Kevin Rudd is a vote against Bush's very significant ally, John Howard, and accordingly, a vote that will further weaken the resolution of the Western world.

Al Qaeda and its shadowy leader have had some significant victories in this political war. While, on the ground, the terrorists are being driven into their caves, while they are, we are often assured, losing their military effectiveness, they are working the politics of Western Democracies very well indeed.

They have seen off the Spanish Prime Minister. A bomb at Madrid's central railway station in March 2004 ensured that a Spanish election would go to the socialist party leader and his pledge to withdraw the Spanish contingent from Iraq, which he duly did.

Attrition wore down Britain's Tony Blair. The Brits took casualties all the time, and although their governments seem more phlegmatic than do ours, there were always tensions within the British Labour Party. Gordon Brown is pulling troops out.

The Europeans in general have not been supportive. They were ready enough during the Cold War to provide the US with support when it meant the defence of Western Europe, but they nowadays have a much more reserved approach. They believe in negotiation, in keeping lines of communication open. Sometimes it sounds like they believe in turning the other cheek.
    blah blah ....
.....Does Kevin Rudd, who has undertaken to end the combat role of Australian soldiers in Iraq, also enjoy the support of Muslim terrorists? It is certainly the case that the defeat of John Howard will further weaken the political position of George Bush.

    ..................

so there you have it, it seems that we are really voting about our support for george bush. i suppose each to their own - but to watso this sounds like a good reason to get rid of howard
