interesting comparison with Muldoon. He was either loved or hated. I didn’t much like him myself and I recall my father despised him. He also had some very - well - weird partying habits given his physical attributes.
and yet he was the one who saw the need to break the gang culture and do something serious about Māori education. He appointed a woman who would have been pretty far removed from his political spectrum to work on options and the first Māori head of Māori affairs was appointed - a brilliant and charming man. He was responsible for setting up the Danks committee in respect of freedom of information and the privacy commission. Plenty more that seemed so at odds with some of his other approaches to power. Very far from what we now see as core conservative perspectives
