Australian republic back on the agenda as Liberal, Labor MPs vow to work together
AUSTRALIA could become a republic within five years after politicians on both sides Parliament today vowed to work together to bring about a vote.
Forty senators and MPs from both the Australian Labor Party and Liberal Party, including Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Opposition leader Bill Shorten, have signed up to a parliamentary friendship group for an Australian head of state.
The Australian Republican Movement aims to bring about a plebiscite within two years with their support.
Two years after that, it hopes to hold a referendum on what model of government an Australian republic would introduce.
“I often get asked why are we talking about this now — aren’t there more urgent things for us to do,” Liberal MP Jason Falinski said announcing the new group in Canebrra today.
“The truth is there will always be more important things for us to do, but there are few things more important than who our head of state is.”
