Firstly, these people are not refugees. Refugees come from refugee camps. They have nothing and need to be fed, clothed, housed and in some cases, resettled. They do not have the $12,000 to buy their way onto People smugglers' boats. They also do not send one son, so that he can later invite the rest of the family over. These people are Illegal immigrants.
They come from ancient civilizations which have not contributed anything to mankind's development for 400 years, and a University professor in Iran was recently thrown into prison for saying exactly that. I am not against immigration, but remember that every illegal immigrant we accept takes away the chance of a genuine refugee to settle here.
In Criminal law, if you are caught receiving stolen goods, your punishment is normally greater than that given to the actual thief, because you are creating a market. By accepting these boat people, the Gillard government is creating a market and is not only condoning people smugglers, but actively helping them.
