From what I understand as already pointed out these mines were abandoned when commodities turned down.

I'm sure miners knew what they were doing then but isn't the point that mining techniques and technology has improved so much that these old tenements become viable again especially considering the price increases.

Mining today will probably make mining of yesterday look like a scorched earth policy which will always leave the best bits behind.
