With apologies, I have plagiarized/copiedthe first sentence of your last paragraph,
"My guess is that the world's most intelligent societies will power their cities with solar/wind and vanadium."
I like it, and with respect, I would like to add to that sentence:
"redox batteries, having their base load supplied with small nuclear powered generators".
