Advanced Micro Says 2nd-Qtr Sales Will Lag Forecasts (Update1)

Sunnyvale, California, July 3 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in making personal- computer processors, cut its second-quarter sales forecast for the second time in two weeks.

The chipmaker expects revenue to be about $600 million, rather than the $620 million to $700 million predicted two weeks ago, the company said in a statement on Business Wire. In April, Chairman Jerry Sanders forecast second-quarter sales of $820 million to $900 million.

Weaker than expected demand in Europe and North America, even for a quarter that's typically the slowest for personal computer sales, prompted Advanced Micro and No. 1 chipmaker Intel to lower sales forecasts last month. The Semiconductor Industry Association in June said a recovery may not take hold until the second half.

AMD shares, which have lost 45 percent of their value this year, yesterday fell 3.7 percent to $8.80.

The Sunnyvale, California-based company didn't give a reason for the change in forecast in the statement. AMD will announce second-quarter results on July 17.
