Results from diamond and aircore drilling support the theory that Mawson is a large mineralised system.
Legend Mining Limited (ASX:LEG) has further enhanced the commercial potential of Mawson discovery within its Rockford Project in WA’s Fraser Range with high-grade assays of up to 21.6 metres at 1.93% nickel, 1.09% copper and 0.10% cobalt from 217.5 metres.
Within the 21.6 metres in first assays from two significant nickel-copper sulphide zones in diamond hole RKDD011 was 1.9 metres at 2.97% nickel, 1.10% copper and 0.15% cobalt also from 217.5 metres.
Other strong lower interval results in this hole were 4.2 metres at 2.68% nickel, 1.36% copper and 0.14% cobalt from 221.7 metres, and 6.3 metres at 2.62% nickel, 1.62% copper and 0.14% cobalt from 232.8 metres.
An upper interval result from the hole was 15 metres at 0.65% nickel, 0.53% copper and 0.04% cobalt from 129.25 metres.
“Material” intercept
Legend managing director Mark Wilson said: “These results support Legend’s previous statements that Mawson is a large mineralised system.
“The 21.6-metre intercept from hole 11 is material in both width and grade.”
Legend also received final assays from diamond drill hole RKDD008, bringing the total of significant nickel-copper sulphides in this hole to 107.9 metres with massive sulphides accounting for 25.3 metres.
The sulphide mineralisation is hosted in a range of rock types including mafic/ultramafic intrusives and metasediments.
Aircore results
Assays have also been received from the first 2020 batch of aircore drill holes with anomalous nickel-copper-cobalt values returned from three holes associated with mafic/ultramafic host rocks.
Results include 12 metres at 0.14% nickel, 0.08% copper and 0.02% cobalt from 56, and 19 metres at 0.37% nickel, 0.15% copper and 0.03% cobalt from 60 metres to the end of hole.
These anomalous results extend over 600 metres strike from a hole in the southwest to one in the northeast.
The position of this geochemical feature coincides with the centre of an oval-shaped magnetic feature and a 4mgal gravity high.
Further infill aircore drilling is required to define the extent of the anomalism.
“Developing story”
Wilson said: “The new aircore assay results received, point to a developing story northeast of the current diamond drilling program with aircore hole RKAC744 a few hundred metres from the collar of diamond hole 11. The geochem footprint is currently over 600 metres long.
“We have commissioned a closer spaced gravity survey in this area, which is now underway.”

Gravity survey
This survey will comprise about 2,000 stations and cover around 10 square kilometres over the main Mawson gravity high.
It will allow accurate modelling of the feature and will be used in conjunction with the aircore data to assist future drill targeting.
Wilson added: “The datasets from both the gravity and aircore are expected to provide the information for follow-up diamond drilling in this area.”
