    @Sailor FNQ; your line about Swiss trains being 'not run by batteries' also made me twitch a little, albeit I opted not to respond.

    It's my understanding that hydro power alone accounts for ~60% of Swiss electricity and that all up renewables including solar and wind already generate more than 80% of their power needs. Of course, power grids for trains is a technology that been around much longer than large battery systems and where it already exists, why remove it?

    Economics suggest battery powered electric trains should obviate the need for long, high loss transmission lines that also become the target for thieves and terrorists - copper costs a fortune and will become even more so with the move to EVs.
