First gold bar poured at Union Reef

The Northern Territory's newest gold mine has just begun production by pouring its first gold bar.

The nine kilogram ingot was poured at the Union Reef refinery near Pine Creek, 200 kilometres south of Darwin.

The mine's operations manager Tom Heaton says Union Reef is expected to make up to $2 billion over the next decade, as well as creating 250 jobs.

"Once we have now commissioned the plant we are going to go on to the real mining operations, and that will lift the gold content," he said.

"Hopefully we would pour a bar sort of this size every day, once we're up and commissioning."
