Imho you are being too critical.
Over design can be very expensive, they have to take calculated risks. Both the additional depth and the getting gas rather than oil would have each added considerably to the design requirements. The additional pressure from the additional depth would have been quite substantial, but also the pressure gradient in a gas column of that height would be much less than for an oil column. They had already gone down the unusual path of spending SOME extra to design the well for testing at all.
It's all a moot point anyway as a well that could not test the 4&5 sands and which did not confirm gas in the 1,2&3 sands up dip in the structure was not worth testing.
Perhaps I am being too optimistic, but I see the case for drilling Roc-2 as more compelling than the case was even for drilling Roc-1. Admittedly the currently lower poo is a damper on the party.
The case for drilling Bewdy and/or Bottler must be pretty compelling if Roc-2 confirms substantial resource.
