its clear that the world shortage of coking coal is of a major concern. If you look around you can see steel producers buying into coal and iron ore companies. When you look at MCC, PE's almost don't matter any more. Its all about supply. Gone are the days when just mining companies could bid for these assets. There is now major competition for these styles of assets from the end users. Its also obvious that companies are prepared to make very large payments for mining assets rather than risking exploration. The press has indicated that Xstrata was interested in buying MCC and yet they seem to have been out bid by Mittal. Less than 1 week later, Ken Talbot makes a major $103m plunge into riversdale to secure a 6% holding. The worlds major companies are running out of options for these very rare styles of coking coal projects. Iron ore is every where and there are probably hundreds of listed wontabes trying to get started in Australia alone. Coking coal is very different and deposits of this size can be counted on one hand with less than 5 fingers. The fundamentals for coal are better than ever with zip short term solution to the supply issues. Imagine if Mittal gets MCC [60% of the global seaborne coking coal market] and then tells everyone to take a hike since they need the coal for themselves??????? what would happen to the coking coal price and all these hungry mega steel mills desperate for feed stock? Its only a matter of time imo before some major player steps up and eats this thing alive. The shear size and proximity to India make this a standout strategic play for a major imo.dyro.
