Yeah, you are doing it wrong, it is absolutely possible for a fund to have a lifetime positive return but have years where they have negative returns.
What do you think the annual return for a fund would be if it existed for 2 years and one year was -5% and the 2nd year was +100% ?
You are also only looking at the share price...dividends count too...
