I wouldnt be writing coal off just yet, it still has at least a decades head start on alternate energy sources imo

Currently Coal provides around 30% of global primary energy needs, generates 41% of the world's electricity and is used in the production of 70% of the world's steel.
Total world coal production reached a record level of 7831Mt in 2012. Up from 4677Mt in 1990
