NZ students plan to arrest Condoleezza Rice

UNIVERSITY students in New Zealand have offered a reward to anyone who makes a citizen's arrest on US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice when she visits the country tomorrow.

But police have warned them to back off, saying there could be serious consequences for anyone trying to breach security to get to Dr Rice.

Auckland District Commander Superintendent Brett England said police were disturbed by the Auckland University Students' Association (AUSA) challenge offering $NZ5000 ($3880) to anyone who made the arrest.

Anyone who attempted to penetrate the police security lines around Dr Rice would be stopped "and the consequences of such a security threat could be very serious indeed".

"Operational planning for this visit has been in the making for several months and there are highly effective security measures in place, so I would strongly advise the association representatives who've put this challenge out, to withdraw it immediately so as to avoid being caught up in something much bigger than they may have anticipated," the New Zealand Press Association quoted Supt England as saying.

AUSA said it would lodge a formal complaint with police over Dr Rice's visit.

AUSA president David Do said the arrest would be for Dr Rice's role in "overseeing the illegal invasion and continued occupation" of Iraq.

Dr Rice will meet Prime Minister Helen Clark, Foreign Minister Winston Peters and Opposition leader John Key in Auckland tomorrow.

The visit, her first trip to New Zealand, follows an ASEAN Regional Forum meeting this week in Singapore and a quick visit to Perth.
