I think what we need is to take the anonymous factor should be taken out of it.
That is, as well as showing the number of thumbs up or down, the name/names (nic) of the "thumber" would come up in a bubble when the mouse is hovered over the thumbs icon.
That would deter people from giving whimsical thumbs I would imagine!
