Japanese gains were muted, however, by the government's report before markets opened that the world's second-largest economy grew at an annual 2.4 percent rate in the three months ended March 31, down from the fastest pace in three years as companies cut spending amid cooling U.S. growth, and below economists' expectations of around 2.7%.
The Bank of Japan concluded its two-day monetary policy meeting Thursday by leaving the key interest rate at 0.5%.
