The Ceto 5 version has proven that the technology is able to desalinate seawater in near shore localities, so no need to go there again.
Ceto 6 will produce power from within the buoyant actuator with cables connecting it to the grid. It can operate in deeper water much further offshore.
CWE along with four other marine energy generators has committed to installing Ceto6 in WaveHub off the coast of Cornwall. The hub is some 16 km from the mainland, therefore unsuitable for pumping water to an onshore generator.
Having two models with different characteristics opens up the possibilities for different markets.
Previously I have stated that it is unlikely that one type of wave energy convertor will suit all locations, in all conditions. We will probably see several technologies come together in projects to better harvest the available wind, wave and tidal energy.
Not all locations suitable for wave energy generation will need freshwater, while others may require freshwater as a priority.
