coal, coal and more coal .... lots about coal being dirty
I remember as a kid holidaying in Wollombi where my aunty had an ice chest to keep the milk cool, then progressed to one powered by kero, boy did that smell.... had kero lamps, went to bed early...THEN one dy the electricty was put on... you shouldm have seen her face... it beamed and beamed.... didnt appear to miss the "romance" of living basic-like, didnt miss the old copper that she used to boil the clothers then wash by hand... nope, electric lights were magic, electric fridge was a luxury and an electric washing machine was bliss!
Now the local town of singleton boomed as the coal mines came to town. Perople had jobs... didnt have to go to Newcastle anymore, or the big smoke Sydney for work .... more families stayed together, more families could buy the electric washing machines and everythin electtric... the people didnt seam to mind that "that dirty coal" they dug out of the ground went to a "coal fired" power station ... all they cared about was their beer was now COLD and they had lights at the flick of a switch ..... even if the coal was in THEIR OWN BACKYARDS
as I read this I wondered where the northern rivers gets it's share of electricity.....
you know the elec that keeps the beer cool, the chardonnay cool, the poor dead xmas turkey cool, the lights on to read the books, cook the evening meal for the children, boil the water for the cappucino, power up the computer to stay in touch with like minder folk,,LTG, al gore, Josh... the boy gaslands...see the movies at the local flicks, the street lights in casino , lisomre, the airconditioners at SCU
What was the potential energy souirce that allowed an energy converter that gorge forth oodles of electrical energy to be usable AS IT FLOWED into the NR protesters fridges, air conditioners, light bulbs, computers........
and lastly did that original energy source come from theri own back yards and if not, WHY NOT ?
