The low-cost Singapore airline Tiger Airways has confirmed it will base its Australian operations in Melbourne.
The carrier already flies between Darwin and Singapore, but is looking to compete on Australian domestic routes.
It will create 1,000 jobs in aircraft maintenance, crew training and administration.
The service will fly from Melbourne Airport with the flight schedule to be announced later this year.
