To understand exotic ''tight'' and ''wet'' gases, readers could look up ''Shell tight gas'' on an internet search engine. According to the oil multinational, ''Tight gas is natural gas held in rock pores 20,000 times narrower than a human hair. Shell has decades of production experience with tight gas.''

    Micro stocks, maxi risks
The so-called ''micro stocks'' are a little too risky for your columnist but readers with a more speculative bent may be interested in Oil Basins (ASX code: OBL) priced at 8c.
The explorer has leases in the right places including onshore in Western Australia's Canning Basin, the happy hunting ground of Buru Energy and Eastern Standard Gas.
Oil Basins has drilled one well, Backreef -1 in its Canning Basin onshore lease, where it encountered ''moveable oil''. A rig has been contracted for a production test scheduled for April-May this year and there is talk of ''potential recoverable reserves valued at $150 million-$450 million''.
One might take this forecast with a grain of salt.
