Its called risk management , stops you taking big loses.
You might have 10 , 20 , 50 positions on at once with tight stops , you may just need one of these to run to make your profit , but if they all fail you don't get wiped out.
Smart traders are playing with lots of parcel at once and tend to use strict rules so as not to get caught up in hype etc. These people do make profits most of the time.
Good traders don't have love affairs with any stock and they look at the now and near not the long and far.
